New Year with Beach Gatherings and Road Trips

Memebers of the public flocked to the beaches and parks in Lautoka yesterday to herald in the new year despite the gloomy weather.

Vehicles were seen queuing up along Lomolomo beach as many tried to find a free spot.

Natokawaqa resident Waisea Nawasoni and his family were among the families fortunate to find one.

“We are grateful that we were able to reach another new year and celebrate it with a few of our relatives from overseas, Nadi and my grandchildren,” he said.

“We had all spent Christmas in Lautoka, and we decided to come and celebrate the new year here at Lomolomo Beach.”

Ifran Ali Sahib said his extended family arrived at the beach at 9.30am ready with their lamb chops, sausages, juice and other necessities needed to cook their lunch.

“There are five families total that came to the beach, and we will head back home from around 2pm to 3pm.”

Mr Ali remarked the turnout was huge yesterday.

Members of the Nayavu Women’s Club from Wainibuka, Tailevu, chose to herald in the new year by chartering a bus to travel to the west, departing at 5am.

The women made a brief stop at the Marine Drive in Lautoka for lunch yesterday.

Club member Mere Vunirewa said 48 women had embarked on the day trip.

“We thought about chartering this bus to take a road trip just for sightseeing,” she said.

“We are grateful for the favourable weather, especially after the recent rainy weather.

“From here we will take the ladies to Fulton College in Sabeto, Denarau, and then we will spend a night at the nature park at the Yadua sand dunes and then return to the village tomorrow.”
